A rock and a roll

9.10.11. It was a great night for rock-and-roll at the deuce. The first band to come on was Not in the Face. These guys were my favorite. The band simply consists of a drummer and a guitarist but together they create impressive bluesy-rock sounds with an extra bang. The best part must have been when they played “brass tracks.” How can you not sing along to an anthem like “I want to see the look on your face when you find out that love is a lie!”? I was blown away. The crowd was promising. We were a filthy bunch huddled against the corner stage. There was the usual round of applause, yells of exaltation, and booze, of course. Times were good.

The closing act was The Happen-ins from Austin, Texas. And these guys got a lot of people moving. Such was the case when they played “the kids don’t dance,” which features that raunchy guitar sound similar to Norman Greenbaum’s “spirit in the sky.” Anyways, The Happen-ins can play some deep soulful rock that will move your insides in a joyous way… if you’re in the mood of course. And the band was totally in the zone. You could see the passion in their faces as when, for example, the bassist would sway to the beat with eyes closed and firmly pressed lips. All-in-all, it can be said that Not in the Face and The Happen-ins left a good impression on Laredo, because they basically did one thing. They rocked the house. ON REPEAT: Greenleaf

Generationals. I love those guys. If I were asked to recommend cool indie-pop music of the present time I would shout out Generationals. If you are new to their music then never fear! The band is fairly new to the music scene having released a total of 1 album, 1 EP, and a song for the movie Going the Distance. Below is "greenleaf" their latest release from their second full-length album Actor-Caster out March 29. The new song exemplifies their ability to constuct catchy pop/rock tunes. That little piano jingle keeps replaying in my head and before you know it I'm searching for the repeat button. "Greenleaf" non-stop!

After building steam with their 2009 debut album, New Orleans indie pop duo Generationals are poised for a breakout 2011, with their solid sophomore set, Actor-Caster, set for a March 29 release. Download an exclusive song, "Greenleaf," below.

Co-frontmen Ted Joyner and Grant Widmer have been pals since they were 13, and their desire to be in a band is about as old as their friendship. "It was probably a combination of two childhood experiences: Seeing the Ninja Turtles perform on their 'Coming Out of Their Shells Tour' when I was about nine," Joyner tells SPIN. "And then it was reinforced by watching Hard Days Night when I was about 11 or so."

The pair spent five years as part of sunny-sounding quintet the Eames Era, which they formed in college, and as Generationals, they've maintained their previous outfit's effervescent, head-bobbing sound. It's a big part of the reason why brands like Reese's and Bloomingdales licensed music from Generationals' first album, Con Law, for TV commercials, including their buoyant breakout single, "When They Fight They Fight."

"I imagine that having music in those places will have some effect," says Joyner. "This is the first LP that we've put out since we've had any major exposure in that world, so I don't really have any reference."

"Greenleaf" is a delightfully springy tune, with a popping keyboard intro, a steady drum progression, and a handclap backdrop at the tail-end. It's a bit Vampire Weekend, a bit '60s pop, layered with pumping synths and bright vocal harmonies.

Before Actor-Caster is released, the band has a few gigs scheduled: Feb. 16 and 17 in Los Angeles and Feb. 25 in New Orleans, before stopping at March's SXSW in Austin, Texas.
